Bush Reckoning

Fire and Ice

Recently I have found fire to be a wonderful medium to express my thoughts on many subjects close to my heart. Bush Reckoning (fire and ice) expresses my concern over European attempts to subjugate the outback, both environment and people, to conform to a narrow and locally inappropriate view of the world.

The ice represents this claustrophobic mindset, but the fire that is in the heart of the environment and the indigenous people slowly melts the frozen exterior and reveals its true hidden beauty.

This mixed-media installation is a playful investigation of the properties of cascading flame. One could comment on the role of telecommunications in facilitating the daily dialogue throughout the bush and the pouring of a 'poison' cuppa, or one could just enjoy the hypnotic rhythms of the pouring fire.
