AUGUST WORKSHOPS
Slip and Sgraffito Workshop
Artist in Residence Mahalia Leckner Sunday 17th August
This hands-on workshop explores the decorative potential of slip and sgraffito techniques on unfired clay. Working with prepared clay slabs, participants will begin by applying coloured slips to the surface, creating a rich base for further mark-making. Using reference images for inspiration, we’ll then draw directly onto the clay, carving into the surface to reveal layers beneath. This process—known as sgraffito—allows for expressive, detailed designs that reflect personal or local stories. Participants will be encouraged to observe and capture the textures, shapes, and character of Broken Hill’s unique landscape, architecture, and people. Whether you're drawn to abstract patterns or representational imagery, this workshop offers space to experiment and develop your own visual language in clay. No prior experience is necessary—just a willingness to explore new techniques and engage with the environment through a creative lens. All materials will be provided, and finished works can be taken home once fired
