Mud + Metal A pop-up exhibition/shop celebrating ceramics, weaving and jewellery.

Kathy Graham and Kelly Leonard are Broken Hill artists who use traditional hand-craft skills within a contemporary context. Their work is deeply rooted in the local environment, through both materials and concepts. Kathy and Kelly are highly committed to the crafting process. The discipline of repetitive movements in craft not only leaves traces of the hand, but also instills in the maker, a feeling of calmness, meditation or flow. As craftspeople, they use both hands and feet, to kick a wheel, throw a pot, spin wool on a wheel, weave using a loom, carve wax and saw metal. Their work is physical, equipment essential and time immeasurable.

Both the artists enjoy an expressive materiality in their respective practices. The materials can be seen to be in conversation with the shapes, forms and patterns chosen; resulting in a lively energy in the works.

Kathy Graham is an artist known for transforming clay and natural fibres into powerful, organic sculptures. She creates tactile pieces that embody strength, beauty, and connection to the land. Kathy produces ceramics for exhibition and markets under her Just Off Centre label.

Kelly Leonard is an artist whose work often explores themes of place and materiality. A core part of her practice is hand-loom weaving, a skill she learned as a teenager from Marcella Hempel, a second-generation Bauhaus weaver. She also hand-crafts metal jewellery under her Rock Chick Studio label for exhibition and markets.
